Background

Spatial climate prediction is essential for assessing impacts of climate change and designing corresponding adaptation strategies and measures to address the impacts. Climate projection can also allow for assessing effects of urban planning and land-use alternation on local thermal environment. Currently, climate impact assessment researchers and land use and urban planners would need to either
request climate modeling specialists to generate necessary data or apply dynamic downscaling to the data by themselves in order to obtain detailed spatial climate prediction data in accordance to their respective purposes. However, dynamic downscaling requires advanced specialized knowledge; hence its application is extremely difficult.

Responding to the needs for making local climate change projections and assessments without advanced modeling skills, the University of Tsukuba has developed a downscaling assessment system called S8・SI-CAT Downscaler. It aims to keep the workload to a minimum for those non-specialists of climate modeling, including government officers and researchers responsible for climate change impact assessments and land use and urban planning, to acquire information on local climate change projections.

Although S8・SI-CAT downscaler is equipped with several spatial resolution options including 30km, 25km, 20km, 10km, 5km, 4km, 2km and 1km, this training workshop will mainly focus on downscaling exercises with the spatial resolution of 30km and 20km. The downscaling operation with the spatial resolution of 10km, 5km, 4km, 2km and 1km outside of Japan requires connecting to cloud services or a super computer run by the University of Tsukuba, and it is still at the stage of configuration of the connection.

Objectives

  • Enhance the understanding on current and future climate conditions at local level, contributed by both global warming and urban/land use policies and plans and the skills for utilising the S8 SI-CAT Downscaler.
  • Provide the participants with hands-on exercises on the specific functions of S8SI-CAT downscaler required for particular purposes for utilisation.

Expected outcomes
  • Trainees will understand the usability of the climate change downscaler and advantages of dynamical downscaling for their respective work
  • Trainees will provide the training organisers with the feedback on challenges and limitations that might be experienced if introduced in their countries
  • Training oragnisers will better understand the needs and gaps in the downscaler operation in the light of country specific conditions and advance strategies of the downscaler operation in various Asian countries.

Target Participants

This workshop will sponsor three trainees each from Indonesia, Mongolia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Specifically, the workshop targets the following:

  1. Technical officer responsible for meteorological or land use data collection;

  2. Government official responsible for land use/urban planning; and

  3. Researcher or a government official responsible for climate change impact assessments or adaptation planning.

Training requirements

All the trainees are requested to bring and use their own PC equipped with the following specifications that is required for running the downscaling with the spatial resolution of 30km and 20km.
  • Display resolution: 13 inches and 1200x800 or greater
  • RAM: more than 8GB
  • VGA/HDMI port for external display/projector
